After three years under the Netflix umbrella, Spry Fox is once again a fully independent studio. As a studio, we’ve managed to somehow survive countless industry upheavals and release a whole lot of original games, like Triple Town, Alphabear, Road Not Taken and Cozy Grove. And after five years, we’re getting ready to finally launch our biggest title ever, Spirit Crossing.

We’re making a big bet: that a lot of people are hungry for a massively social game about self-expression, friendship and community, built with intense respect and affection for everyone who plays it. If this sounds like something you might be excited about, here’s how you can get involved:

Where we’re currently at, as a studio

Nearly 50 people are currently working on Spirit Crossing, mostly full-time, some as part-time contractors or as co-developers through partner studios. That’s smaller than you’d expect for a comparable game (teams are often 2-4x our size), so we’re relying on experience and making smart tradeoffs. Almost everyone here has been making games professionally for 10-30 years.

To make this work, we’re also making real sacrifices. All of us are taking large pay cuts. Daniel and I have reduced our salaries to $20,000/year, and we’ve spent our own cash to buy the studio back. And we are taking all the equity in the new company and giving the majority of it to the rest of the studio’s employees. In a world where executives tend to make 10x the salaries that employees do, and have 100x the equity, we want Spry Fox to be an example of something fairer and hopefully much better.

    A rollercoaster beginning

The spinout from Netflix happened extremely fast. Three months from “maybe we should explore this” to “we’re independent again.” To put this in perspective, a spinout of this magnitude would typically take 6 to 9 months. So we’ve been sprinting to disentangle ourselves. It has been a LOT of work.

Those headaches aside, we are so thankful. For the past three years, the game industry has been such a bleak place. Countless companies have shut down, including some truly great studios that made history-changing games. I am very grateful that during this otherwise dark time, something this surprising and hopeful could happen for us.

What independence changes for Spirit Crossing

Under Netflix, Spirit Crossing had a simple objective: launch for free, on mobile, exclusively for Netflix members.

Now we’re independent, so Netflix won’t be paying all our bills anymore. (But Netflix remains a great partner, and Spirit Crossing will still be free on mobile for Netflix members!) If Spirit Crossing is going to live and thrive for decades, on many platforms, we need to do extra work: dev work to accommodate new platforms, more QA, while implementing a real business model that can sustain live development into the future… all while also, you know, continuing to polish and actually launch the game!

Our goal for 2026 is straightforward and very personal to us: launch a big, ambitious cozy game that brings people together, encourages kindness, and reduces loneliness in the world. A game literally about building a village together.

We know from extensive research that loneliness is massively harming people’s health and happiness, and even causing premature death. So we believe there is nothing more meaningful that we could be putting our time into than this. On a personal note, I’d much rather give up my salary and the security of a big company job than be doing anything else right now.

Timeline: We’re targeting a public beta in spring 2026 (roughly April–June) and a full launch later in 2026. These dates could move as we do the extra work to support more platforms and build a sustainable business model, but we’ll keep communicating clearly as we go.

We haven’t forgotten our other games

We also care deeply about the worlds we’ve already made – and the people who love them. One example: Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit never got the launch it deserved as part of Netflix. We’re joining forces with old friends to help bring it to PC and consoles, and we’ll share details as soon as we’re able.

Once again: how you can support us (if you’d like to!)

If you’re excited about Spirit Crossing and want to help us thrive as an independent studio once again, here are two high-impact ways. One is to click on those links at the top of this message. The other is to share this message through social media, or directly to someone who you know.

Anyone who loves cozy games – or who’s been craving a game that cares about community – might benefit from knowing about Spirit Crossing. And it would help us a lot.

We’re going to keep writing updates for you all.  If there’s anything you’d like to hear about, like more information about our spinout, development details, what we’re learning, what we’re struggling with… please tell us. We want to be as open as we can.

For those who use a Backbone or other 3rd party controller on their mobile devices, read on to learn about updates to the control schemes! Mobile Gamepad Controllers now share the same control scheme as the Netflix Game Controller device. (3rd party controls for PC and TV are not officially supported at this time!) The main changes are:

    • Zoom & scroll menus with Right Stick (RS)
    • For all tools with an aiming component, you no longer need to hold and drag to use your tools! Simply press ‘X’ (Xbox, ‘B’ on Backbone) to use your currently held tool, aim with the Left Stick, and press ‘A’ to use it.

If you would prefer to use the Netflix Game Controller instead of the mouse and keyboard setup on your browser, press SHIFT+TAB to open the Netflix overlay. Click ‘Controllers’, and follow the QR code pop-up to connect your mobile device.

    🚏🚌 The Long-Awaited Journey Home

🐻New Spirit Bear Quests for Bunch and Sofia!

👗New Merchant: Taylor Couture, the Fashion Bear

Meet Taylor Couture, the truly fabulous new fashion bear who will appear every few days to offer fresh new fits and hairstyles for you to try!

    • Fun Fact: Insists that every hue in their exclusive dye collection comes from sweet-talking rainbows into sharing their colors.
    • Quote: “Never worry about being overdressed. Everyone else is just under-fabulous.”
    • Likes: Wigs, all of them. Watching someone’s eyes sparkle when they try on the perfect outfit.
    • Dislikes: Moths who don’t even have the courtesy to try clothes before eating them. The phrase “sensible fashion.”

    Astral Projection Auras

Communicate today’s mood from the astral plane with Auras! Auras are soft glowing lights in colors of your choosing that will manifest to other Scouts when you appear on their island in your Astral Projection form.

Collect all the colors of the Aura rainbow with the Taylor Couture. When you’re not displaying a particular glorious hue, you can store them in your closet. Speaking of closets, you’ll now notice your closet has additional slots, as well as more expansion options with Mr. Kit. Please allow a day after the update for these to appear!

    Quality of Life Updates

To Hat, or Not To Hat: Players can now decide if their Companions should wear a hat or not. To hat or de-hat your Companion, visit Andrea to purchase one of three new items to manage the haberdashery of your Companions:

    • “Closed Accessories”: Companions will only wear hats you give them
    • “Open Accessories”: Companions will change hats on their own every so often
    • “Hat-B-Gone”: Removes current hat on a Companion (but they will be able to pick a new one the next day.)

The cycle for hat changes has now been increased to 7 days, allowing your Companion to enjoy their current hat for the full week. Note that some cycles may result in Companions not picking any hat at all, as is their fashion-given right.

New Profile Icons: Quest Objects! Use these profile icons to showcase your affection for the cast of Spirit Bear characters.

    • If you leave the app running for an extended period of time, it may crash or freeze occasionally.
    • A loading error called AP202 can sometimes appear. If this happens, please close the app and restart it.
    • Small berry bushes leave only one berry behind when harvesting with the accordion. This is only a visual bug.

🐻New Spirit Bear Quests for Cozander, Lorelle, and Heath!

    🎩 Companion Hats

Have you ever found yourself thinking, “I wish I could show Craw and Snugula how much I appreciate them”? Well, now you can! Enter: Companion Hats. Here are just a few of the stylish offerings!

You can now purchase cheeky little hats from Astrid. She will sell 2-3 hats every day, depending on how far your Scout has progressed. Once you give the companion a hat by throwing it to them, it will wear it immediately. Don’t be alarmed if at first, they seem to be eating it! This is hat-wearing custom in Companion culture. If you do not choose a hat for your Companion to wear, they will decide every day on a different hat to adorn their adorable skulls with. Their options will be limited to whatever hats you’ve already given them to try on.

    🐞 New Critter Models

If you liked the Shell models from the last update, we think you’ll love the new Critter models!

Scouts can now craft models of their favorite critters and gently place them upon a critter displayer. To unlock the ability to make Critter Models, complete the Tier 2 Shell Pickup Badge (75 shells), then speak with Tallow. To craft a specific critter model, you will need to have donated that critter to Tallow, AND have one in hand.

Recipes for the displayers upon which to display your Critter Models can be found by corresponding with a mysterious stranger.🔪 The first letter with this stranger will be sent to you once you have earned the second level badge Exploration > “Net Swinger”, Collect 50 unique critters (edited for clarity 11/21), or once you have crafted any critter model. Please stay cozy and don’t get murdered by this new mysterious stranger…”

    🐚 Re-Named Shells

It was observed by our most enthusiastic IRL shell collector players that the names of the shells in-game were inconsistent with real-life shells. Our dutiful writers have done a pass to make the shells of Cozy Grove more ✨ fantastical ✨. Shout-out to GroundedAura, who is are working on updating the full list of names in the Camp Spirit Wiki HERE!

    Quality of Life Updates

    • Made improvements to a few Spirit Bear animations.
    • Quest items that might have been thrown and lost on the island will now be mailed back to the player when the Day switches.
    • Cat Recipe Chats: All Bears have new chats that give hints about cat recipes. These chats will come up after interacting with a Bear that has no active quest.
    • Shrine Dialogue: Shrines now have specific dialogue for each character, instead of general dialogue.
    • New Spooky Spirit Well: There are now new visuals when using the dowsing rod in the Old Grounds. These have different loot than the main island’s dowsing rod loot!

    Controls

    • Made adjustments to the Gamepad controls map that should help things feel more familiar and intuitive. This work is still in progress!

    • The Vintage Scout hat now has the tag, “scout” and counts towards fashion quests.
    • Items placed too close to teleporters can now be picked up.
    • Multiple typos have been corrected.

    Known Issues

    • Companion Hats: Once Companions are given a hat, they will henceforth wear a different hat each day. In the future, players will have the option to opt out of hat-wearing and disable automatically picking a hat.
    • If you leave the app running for an extended period of time, it may crash or freeze occasionally
    • A loading error called AP202 can sometimes appear. If this happens, please close the app and restart it.
    • Small berry bushes leave only one berry behind when harvesting with the accordion. This is only a visual bug.
    • [iOS] Work continues on improving performance issues with some iOS devices. We hope to have more information on this in the next update!

🍂 The Harvest Haunt Has Arrived!

From today until November 10th*, we invite you to get in your cutest or spookiest costume, decorate your camp with fall vibes, collect fall items, aid pumpkin-headed imps around your camp, catch spooky critters, craft jack-o’lanterns, and summon a fall kitty. You’ll also be able to Trick or Treat with Bears around the island. Make sure to check in with Mrs. Carouse for new quests each day!

For our veteran Scouts, you might recognize this as Camp Spirit’s version of the Fall Festival. Be sure to let us know what you think of the changing of the seasons! 🎃

❗Please note: This was originally listed as November 12th. Please be sure to log in and collect your Harvest goodies before the 10th!

This season’s seasonal decor set created as a “special thanks” to our Discord Moderators and Season 1 #SpryFoxCreators!

    • iOS – v2.1.1-325

    • We are aware that players are missing an item to complete the bus and go home. We are still carefully crafting this important moment, and will have the next chapter available to you soon 🚌
    • Bunch’s pickle flashback will now properly conclude, allowing the player to continue playing instead of being semi-blocked in a bRokEn WaSTeLAnd of tHe FLaShbAck VOID, which was requiring a restart to escape from!
    • Fixed an issue causing some players to freeze during the scout wakeup animation of a new day.
    • Fixed the “blank” Memo Moth Daily Quest that Sofia has been giving.
    • For those who have received a mask from Cozander with the instruction to give it to another bear, please hold on to the mask for now. It will be useful for a quest in a future update! 🎭

🍵 We’d also like to take a moment to acknowledge the crashes that have been occurring on certain iPads. It is taking us longer than usual to address these issues, and we can’t thank you all enough for your patience 🙏 We will share an update on iPad performance as soon as we can.

    New Features

    🐚 New Shell Models

Scouts can now craft shell models to display their shells on! • “Scout Profiles” is a new, in-progress profile feature that allows you to display collectible Stickers to personalize what information you share with friends.
    • Scout Profiles can be viewed through your Friends List and Astral Projections.
    • Stickers can be collected by completing Bear story chapters.
    • Stickers can be used to personalize your profile, or not-so-subtly communicate your gift preferences.

We want to make even more tweaks to this system, but we hope you like the beginning of this beautiful friendship 🎁 We can’t wait to hear what you think!

    • A loading error called AP202 can sometimes appear. If this happens, please close the app and restart it.

🎶 It’s the most wonderful time of the year – Spooky Season! 👻 While we Spirit Scouts are happy to delve into the strange and macabre all year ‘round, we like to turn things up to 11 when Autumn comes to call.

Read on (if you dare) to learn about the new features we’ve summoned, plus a few carefully placed salt circles to improve Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit’s quality of life.

For an extra treat, visit bit.ly/btscampspirit for a behind-the-scenes look at the development of Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit and the development of Update 2.0!

    Updates to the Old Grounds

    New Collection Category: Nightmares!

A new collectible has been added! These (probably harmless 👀) calcified nuggets of fear known as “Nightmares” can be foraged in the Old Grounds. Donate them to Tallow for rewards, or burn them into Hairball essences with Flamey.

    • 15 total collectibles available in various rarities
    • Come in a myriad of…flavors(?) including Confusing, Desolate, Grisly, and Monstrous
    • A Nightmare’s chance of dropping is impacted by your Fire Level

    New Relics: Pottery

All these Spirit shenanigans seem to have summoned a new Relic; Pottery Relics, that is! Another burnable source for Relic Ash, these new anthropological artifacts can be found in the Old Grounds. Donate them to Tallow for additional rewards!

    New Light Source: Glowing Mushrooms!

Nightmares? Ancient artifacts? We need to lighten all this spooky up a bit! Enter: Glowing Mushrooms. You’ll now find super stinkin’ cute (and, okay, still a little spooky) Glowing Mushrooms around Spooky Island.

    • These Glowing Mushrooms will help to start spreading light throughout the Island, but beware! 😱These mushrooms are known to enjoy a little jump scare every now and again, moving around every few days in true cursed-island style.

    Additional Updates

    New Main Menu Art

    • OOooOooOOoOooOooooohhhh!! ….. BE SCARED! 👻

    New Stories

    • Two new Bears are waiting to meet you! They await you in the depths of the Old Grounds… (FL20)

    New Decor

    • Arbor Set & Western Set
      • These were mistakenly listed as part of a previous update – they’re in the game for real, now!

    Quality-of-Life Changes

    • A New Battery Saver option has been added to the Options menu! Toggling this on will lessen your framerate from 60 to 30, but in exchange, your battery will last longer, and your phone will no longer overheat!
    • Bus Upgrades now have clearer quest and hint instructions.
    • The Old Grounds island has been recolored to up the spookiness factor.
    • Displayers now only accept 1 item from a stack of displayables, instead of taking the whole stack.

Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit & The Story So Far

Written by //Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit//Comments Off on Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit & The Story So Far

Hi Scouts! Now that we’ve announced the imminent launch of Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit on June 25th, I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about some of the things we hoped to accomplish in this sequel, what this game means to Spry Fox, and what it’s been like developing this within Netflix.

    What’s interesting about this sequel?

As I mentioned way back when we first announced the development of a Cozy Grove sequel, the original Cozy Grove was not architected in a way that made it easy to add new locations to the game, or new bears over time. This, for example, made it difficult to add a second island or to add interior spaces aside from the Scout’s tent. In fact, as CG1 players crammed ever more decorations, plants, and animals into their islands (sometimes in ways we didn’t expect), merely maintaining the performance of the game as-is was proving to be very challenging. So Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit has been extensively overhauled, and as a result, loading times are improved, some bears now have their own homes you can visit the inside of, and the main island is not the only island in the game!

It probably goes without saying, but Camp Spirit also features all-new bears and stories, all of which take advantage of the many lessons we as a studio learned from working on the original game. We can’t wait to hear what you think of this new cohort of wonderful and bizarre characters. Camp Spirit has a ton of other new features and improvements as well. The complete list would be quite long, but here are a few of my personal favorites:

    • Companion animals who follow you around, send you amusing letters, and even have useful skills that you can activate.
    • New activity: powerwashing – cleaning away the grime feels so satisfying.
    • New “Quality of Life” improvements that make it easier to find and identify the items you need, when you need them.
    • Many design tweaks that make the game more enjoyable (for example, more abundant and affordable backpack storage).
    • Bear landmarks that visibly evolve alongside a bear as you help them along their personal journey.
    • The ability to add your fellow players as members of your scout troop, and to send/receive gifts from them.
    • New “flashback” system, enabling bears to more vividly tell stories about their past lives.

What does this sequel mean to Spry Fox?

The original Cozy Grove holds a special place in all our hearts. We have made many games over the years, some of which ended up being quite popular (I’m thinking especially about Triple Town and Alphabear.) But this is the first game of ours that seems to have really touched players’ hearts. It was incredibly gratifying to us to read all the comments saying how much our bears and their stories meant to our community. And it was equally wonderful to hear from so many people who told us that Cozy Grove was a reliable, relaxing antidote to the difficulties in their lives.

We have always wanted our games to be a positive force in people’s lives. That’s why we decided on the motto “Making Happiness” when we founded the studio back in 2010. I think, or at least I hope, that we’ve made a lot of people happy in the 14 years since we started Spry Fox. But until Cozy Grove, I’m not sure we ever got beyond “I’m having fun playing this game”-style happiness. To be very clear, I think it’s a noble thing to entertain people – “I’m having fun” is more than good enough! But, now we know that we can go farther. We can make people feel seen. We can take them on a journey that they care about. AND yes, we can relax and entertain them, too! And maybe, as we continue to sharpen our focus on real-world in-game friendships, we can bring people closer together.

That’s what Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit means to us. It’s our humble attempt to leave the world a little bit better than we found it. We really hope that you enjoy it.

What’s it like developing this game within Netflix?

In all honesty, being part of Netflix has been a huge relief for us. As you may or may not be aware, starting sometime around 2022, the video game industry was taking a very serious turn for the worse (economically-speaking). Our industry has been experiencing its most serious downturn in decades. All around us, studios are doing layoffs or, worse, shutting down entirely. To call this “dispiriting” would be a severe understatement… we have been very worried about our friends in the industry.

Meanwhile, Netflix has given Spry Fox more support and encouragement than we’ve ever experienced before. We now have the resources to make the games we want to make, on the timetable we want to make them, with very few compromises. And speaking of “compromises”… we don’t need to put advertisements or in-app purchases in our games! This is wonderful because, over the years, we never stopped struggling with how to ethically monetize our mobile games while also surviving as a studio. It was always a painful, time-consuming process that ate up a shockingly large percentage of our development time and energy. Now, we can put all that energy into simply making our games as good as they can be. If you’ve never made a free-to-play mobile game before, you cannot imagine how wonderful this feels for us.

After we decided that we wanted to make a sequel to Cozy Grove, we pitched the idea to some folks whose financial support we would need in order to get the game made. None were interested in supporting our vision for what we felt this game should be. So I can also say that if it weren’t for Netflix, Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit would probably not exist. We are so grateful that it does!

How do we think about the future of Camp Spirit?

It depends on things I can’t quite predict, like what exactly will people love (and not love) about the game! I can tell you that we’re excited to hear what everyone thinks about Camp Spirit and to spend some time post-launch doing updates that address common feedback from our community. It’s very rewarding to launch a game that many people enjoy, but it’s even more rewarding to know and deliver exactly what people want, because they’re telling you directly. 🙂 Speaking of: if you’re not already a member of our Discord or Reddit communities, please join!

There’s also no shortage (as there never is) of features and polish ideas we’ve dreamed up but not had time to implement yet, and we’ll be looking for opportunities to tackle some more of that. And last but not least, we have seen a bunch of comments from some of our Cozy Grove fans about wanting Camp Spirit to be available on more platforms. We hear you, we share your desire, and while we don’t have plans beyond mobile to share at this moment, we will keep you updated on this in the future.

    What’s next for Spry Fox?

Like I said before, we’re already planning some solid updates for Camp Spirit! Otherwise, we’re just going to keep making new, original games. 🙂  It’s been 14 (!!) years since we started this studio, and I hope that 14 years from now, we’re still talking about our jobs the exact same way… concentrating on making original games that bring you happiness.

    Warm regard,

David (aka Chedd), and all the Spry Foxes
